Here's a brief history of Instant Shade, an Australian family-owned business from the very beginning to today...
1996
Founded in Adelaide
Originally called the “Kanopy Company”, we were the exclusive licensed distributor of the KD KANOPY brand of marquees from the USA – the Original (and still the best) Pop-Up Marquee design.
1998
Moved to Melbourne
The two founders moved the business to Melbourne to pursue growth opportunities offered by the growing events industry at the time. It originally operated from the founder’s garage in Brighton East.
2001
First warehouse
Our first warehouse was in Cheltenham, which we quickly filled with marquees and out-grew.
2002
New premises in Moorabbin
The business provided both HIRE and SALES of marquees, and then added UMBRELLAS as a new product range. Soon a new warehouse in Moorabbin was required to fit all the stock.
2003
Imported first container
Originally all our products were made in Australia, but as the world globalised we expanded our supply chain, first to Europe and then Asia.
2004
Separated hires and sales
One business became two, as Instant Shade (Sales) and Instant Marquees (Hire) separated to allow each to focus on its specific customer base. Both businesses still operate under the one "umbrella" company and often coordinate on projects.
2005
Introduced the NeoShade marquee range
We designed and developed our own brand of marquees to our exacting specifications, to be used in our Hire business and to Sell to our commercial customers.
2013
Two warehouses in Moorabbin
We expanded into neighbouring warehouses in Moorabbin to accommodate the growth of the business, and added a "sewing room" for canvas repairs and custom fabrication.
2021
Another move
Sales operations moved from Moorabbin to a much larger warehouse and office in Braeside.
2024
Added in-house printing capability
By investing in a large format digital printer, we can now provide very fast turnaround branding options to our customers.

Yes. Instant Shade is an Australian owned and operated family business headquartered in Braeside, Victoria. We proudly employ a team of expert Australian staff in all aspects of sales, marketing, warehousing and logistics.
We’ve been purveyors of shade for nearly 30 years—selling, hiring and refining our designs since the mid-1990s.
